Engine No. Identication

MINI  ENGINE  NUMBER  IDENTIFICATION

Many Mini engines have lost their number or had the wrong one put on, others have been lost or damaged, some have been decked, (machined), and some have private tuning company numbers stamped on too. In these cases the appropriate company may be contacted, but any many case the only way to identify what you have got, is ask someone who knows or check out David Vizards book (listed on here). We also do a ‘What Mini Engine’ section to help.

Over the years many Mini’s had ‘engine swaps’, I have lost count of the number we have done, including ones from old Austins, and the Metro’s. This was usually done as an upgrade for more power or to replace a tired engine and or gearbox. Customers ask for 1275 engine to be put in a Mini that only has drum brakes, this is something we refuse to do on safety grounds. Drum brakes can only just cope with 1000cc… so to have a 1275 fitted we always insist on disc brakes being fitted too.

The following should help you find out what you have got or should have as regards the engine in your Mini. The basics are the identifier, which tells you the capacity in cc’s (cubic centimeters) it can also indicate where built, vehicle, high or low compression etc. Then other letters/numbers as to various specifications, oil filter/breathing etc and finally the number, gives you an idea as to how far down the production run.

If you need a new engine number tag, correctly stamped from below, they are listed on the shop.

All engines with prefix GSE or RKM were of UNIPART origin when BL reorganised and split its parts organisation. Engines with and E at the end of the engine number means it is a reconditioned service unit only and would  be a basic engine assembly with no ancillaries.

If you can’t find your engine on the list above it may have come from a specialist engine builder and have unique numbers, use the contact page we may be able to help, also if you need a replacement plate we can stamp or emboss the engine plates, just search the shop
